NST Online » Sport By : Arnaz M. KhairulTHE Olympic Council of Malaysia’s (OCM) leadership remained, but with an injection of four new faces in the council at its 26th Annual General Assembly yesterday.
That fresh injection and a few tweaks, serve a somewhat conservative vision to ensure continual improvement, as promised by returning president Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja’afar.
FA of Malaysia secretary Datuk Seri Dr Ibrahim Saad, who replaced SRA of Malaysia president Datuk A. Sani Karim as one of the four vice presidents, is the only high profile personality to be brought into the new council.
Former Malaysian Netball Association council member, Moira Tan, took the assistant secretary (female) post unopposed after incumbent Latifah Yacob withdrew at the last minute, citing personal and medical reasons.
Of the two other posts contested, Ramlay Ibrahim replaced incumbent Phua Tai Neng as assistant secretary (male) after garnering 43 votes in a three-way election that included Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia secretary Edwin Chong. Phua received 27 votes while Chong 19.
Malaysian Malays Cricket Association secretary Rosmanizam Abdullah replaced incumbent S. Jahendran as assistant treasurer with a difference of just five votes, to complete the lineup. Rosmanizam garnered 47 votes.
"A strong nucleus in the leadership returns, thus there is continuity and the stability that we’ve had is maintained. We’ll continue with the things we’ve been doing all this while," said Tunku Imran.
"Our vision for this term will be to get closer to the national sports associations (NSAs) and be of service to the membership. We’ll help them upgrade themselves as well as continue to play consultative roles.
"A rating system will be established to help NSAs focus on improvement. The rating system will allow for the production of statistics which would indicate the level, the numbers involved and other critical information.
"It will be useful to help themselves identify areas which need improvement and also useful for sponsors," said Tunku Imran.Tunku Imran also called on NSAs to utilise facilities and services provided by OCM such as the alternative disputes resolution (ADR) service.
An athletes’ welfare fund has also been established, which will complement what NSAs receive from the Government, while Tunku Imran also mooted his idea for an annual presidents’ forum, in which the top leaders in NSAs will discuss and propose ideas for development.
