Tunku Imran, Kok Chi retain posts

DAILY EXPRESS NEWS
Tunku Imran, Kok Chi retain posts 27 May, 2007

Kuala Lumpur: Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja'afar and Datuk Sieh Kok Chi were officially retained as president and honorary secretary of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) for the 2007/2009 term at its 26th annual general meeting here Saturday.

Deputy president Datuk Dr M.Jegathesan also retained his post as there were no challengers for the seat when nominations opened on April 12.

The new face in the vice president's line-up is FA of Malaysia (FAM) secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Ibrahim Saad, who also won unopposed for the sole vacant seat resulting from Datuk A.Sani Karim's withdrawal.

Incumbents Prof W.Y Chin, Prof. Datuk Dr Zakaria Ahmad, Datuk Roy Rajasingham and Low Beng Choo were all returned unopposed.

Apart from Dr Ibrahim, Moira Tan Siew See also won the honorary assistant secretary's post (women) after the incumbent Latifah Tan Sri Yacob decided not to defend the seat.
Incumbent honorary treasurer Datuk Seri Kee Yong Wee also retained his post without any fight.

At the OCM's elections Saturday, only two seats were contested.

Ramlay Ibrahim beat incumbent Phua Tai Neng for the honorary assistant secretary's post (men) while Rosmanizam Abdullah also beat incumbent S.Jahendran for the honorary assistant treasurer's post.

The elections this time were expected to be a hot affair as Tunku Imran, who has been president of OCM since 1998, was to be challenged by Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim while Kok Chi (honorary secretary since 1992) by former National Sports Council director-general, Datuk Wira Mazlan Ahmad.

Shahidan, who was nominated by the Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU), however, later withdrew despite having signed acceptance of nomination while Mazlan (nominated by the National Silat Association) declined to join the fray as he did not want to go against Koh Chi, who was a good friend. - Bernama

OCM Elections: Quartet of new faces

NST Online » Sport
By : Arnaz M. Khairul

THE Olympic Council of Malaysia’s (OCM) leadership remained, but with an injection of four new faces in the council at its 26th Annual General Assembly yesterday.

That fresh injection and a few tweaks, serve a somewhat conservative vision to ensure continual improvement, as promised by returning president Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja’afar.

FA of Malaysia secretary Datuk Seri Dr Ibrahim Saad, who replaced SRA of Malaysia president Datuk A. Sani Karim as one of the four vice presidents, is the only high profile personality to be brought into the new council.

Former Malaysian Netball Association council member, Moira Tan, took the assistant secretary (female) post unopposed after incumbent Latifah Yacob withdrew at the last minute, citing personal and medical reasons.

Of the two other posts contested, Ramlay Ibrahim replaced incumbent Phua Tai Neng as assistant secretary (male) after garnering 43 votes in a three-way election that included Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia secretary Edwin Chong. Phua received 27 votes while Chong 19.

Malaysian Malays Cricket Association secretary Rosmanizam Abdullah replaced incumbent S. Jahendran as assistant treasurer with a difference of just five votes, to complete the lineup. Rosmanizam garnered 47 votes.

"A strong nucleus in the leadership returns, thus there is continuity and the stability that we’ve had is maintained. We’ll continue with the things we’ve been doing all this while," said Tunku Imran.

"Our vision for this term will be to get closer to the national sports associations (NSAs) and be of service to the membership. We’ll help them upgrade themselves as well as continue to play consultative roles.

"A rating system will be established to help NSAs focus on improvement. The rating system will allow for the production of statistics which would indicate the level, the numbers involved and other critical information.

"It will be useful to help themselves identify areas which need improvement and also useful for sponsors," said Tunku Imran.Tunku Imran also called on NSAs to utilise facilities and services provided by OCM such as the alternative disputes resolution (ADR) service.

An athletes’ welfare fund has also been established, which will complement what NSAs receive from the Government, while Tunku Imran also mooted his idea for an annual presidents’ forum, in which the top leaders in NSAs will discuss and propose ideas for development.

Chiefs of sports bodies urged to play more active role

KUALA LUMPUR: The presidents of the various National Sports Associations (NSA) have been urged to play a more direct and active role in their respective organisations in order to further develop sports.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Jaafar said yesterday that only a handful of the presidents are active and called on them to understand their sports and also to be more interactive with the OCM as well.

In this respect, Tunku Imran has proposed the setting up of an annual “President’s Forum” whereby all the presidents of the NSAs can meet with him to channel their views and also discuss matters concerning their associations.

“This will be a meeting between me and the presidents and we can also find ways to look at how we can work together and how they (the presidents) can play a more active role.

“I believe that there is a need of such a forum so that we can also help the presidents to understand our role and structure in greater detail,” he said in his opening remarks at the OCM general assembly here yesterday.

The OCM president also said that officials wanting to serve on the Olympic body should not do so for personal reasons but with the aim to serve sports in the country.

At the assembly yesterday, four new faces made their way into the OCM line-up for the next two years. FA of Malaysia (FAM) secretary general Datuk Dr Ibrahim Saad is the new vice president taking over from incumbent Datuk A. Sani Karim who did not contest.

The other new faces are Ramlay Ibrahim and Moira Tan who won the assistant men’s and women’s secretary posts respectively.

Ramlay defeated incumbent Phua Tai Neng and Asum secretary Edwin Chong in a three-way fight while Moira won unopposed when incumbent Latiffah Yacob withdrew from the race at the 11th hour.

Rosmanizam Abdullah defeated long-serving assistant treasurer S. Jahendran by five votes in a straight fight.

All other posts were won uncontested by the incumbents.
